International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) Chief Prosecutor Md Aminul Islam has described ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s announcement to return to the country as a “political stunt”.

He remarked that if Sheikh Hasina is truly courageous, she should return to face the judicial process concerning the cases related to the July 2024 killings.

The chief prosecutor made these comments while speaking to journalists at his office on Monday.

Referring to the recent declaration made by Sheikh Hasina, who is currently exiled in New Delhi, India, the chief prosecutor said, “This is nothing but a political stunt. If she truly has the courage, let her return to the country and face trial for the July killings.”

Regarding the progress of the ongoing cases at the tribunal, he informed that the prosecution has already received investigation reports for 10 cases related to the July-August 2024 killings.

He further said the list of accused in these cases includes former ministers Shajahan Khan, Amir Hossain Amu, Justice AHM Shamsuddin Choudhury Manik, and Kamal Ahmed Majumdar, along with many senior police officials.

Sheikh Hasina recently expressed her desire to return to the country within this year during an interview with an Indian media outlet.

She has been sentenced to death in a case involving crimes against humanity during the July 2024 killings.
