Harry Maguire admitted he felt “shocked and gutted” after left him out of England’s squad for the 2026 World Cup in North America.
Tuchel will announce his final 26-man squad on Friday, but players started receiving calls on Thursday. Maguire later confirmed on social media that he would not travel to the tournament.
The 33-year-old defender wrote: “I was confident I could have played a major part this summer for my country after the season I’ve had. I’ve been left shocked and gutted by the decision.
“I’ve loved nothing more than putting that shirt on and representing my country over the years.
“I wish the players all the best this summer.”
Maguire returned to the England squad in March after Tuchel handed him his first call-up since taking charge. The centre-back has earned 66 caps for his country and played in multiple major tournaments.
The decision follows a strong second half of the season with. Maguire regained a regular place after Michael Carrick took charge in January and helped United finish third in the Premier League.
England will head into the World Cup with several defensive options despite Maguire’s omission. Tuchel has reshaped parts of the squad since replacing Gareth Southgate and has prioritised form and mobility across the back line.
The tournament takes place in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
