Harrison Ford has said that Donald Trump’s approach to the climate crisis “scares the shit” out of him.
In a new interview with The Guardian, the veteran actor criticised the US president’s record, saying, “He doesn’t have any policies, he has whims. It scares the shit out of me.”
“The ignorance, the hubris, the lies, the perfidy,” Ford continued. “[Trump] knows better, but he’s an instrument of the status quo and he’s making money, hand over fist, while the world goes to hell in a handbasket. It’s unbelievable. I don’t know of a greater criminal in history.”
Ford’s comments come amid Trump’s ongoing dismantling of climate and clean air protections since returning to office in January. So far during his second term, he has halted clean energy projects, banned the use of terms such as ‘climate change’ and ‘emissions’ in government departments, and withdrawn the US from the Paris climate agreement once again.=
Addressing the United Nations last month, Trump described climate change as “the greatest con job ever perpetrated on the world”, claiming that “if you don’t get away from this green scam, your country is going to fail. You need strong borders and traditional energy sources if you are going to be great again.”=
A long-standing environmental campaigner, Ford said Trump’s aversion to wind turbines was simply because “he hasn’t yet seen a gold one”. He added that the president’s climate legacy would be remembered as “a clear expression of ignorance, of hubris and of purposeful subterfuge.”
Other public figures have also spoken out against Trump during his second term. Actor Robert De Niro has urged Americans to “keep fighting” the president, saying, “There’s no other way to face a bully. You have to face him and fight it out.”
Musician Bruce Springsteen has repeatedly called for Trump’s impeachment, saying he should be “consigned to the dustbin of history.”
Meanwhile, Joan Baez recently penned a biting poem titled Little Green Worm about Trump, while Neil Young released a protest song, Big Crime, criticising the Republican leader and declaring earlier this year that Trump was “out of control” and that “we need a real president.”
