Cricket fans in Sydney were sent ducking for cover as former Australia Under-19 batter Harjas Singh delivered an extraordinary performance, scoring an unbeaten 314 from just 141 balls in a domestic grade match.
The 20-year-old left-hander produced a brutal display of power hitting for Western Suburbs, smashing 35 sixes and 14 fours as his side posted a mammoth 483 for 5 in their 50-over innings on Saturday.
Singh’s innings now ranks as the third highest in the history of Sydney first grade cricket, the level just below professional state competition. Only Victor Trumper’s 335 in 1903 and Phil Jaques’ 321 in 2007 stand above it.
“That’s the cleanest ball striking I’ve ever witnessed from myself, for sure,” Singh told Fox Cricket.
“It’s something I’m quite proud of because I’ve worked in the off-season quite a bit on my power hitting, and for it to come off today was quite special.”
After reaching his century from 74 balls in the 35th over, Singh accelerated dramatically, adding another 214 runs from just 67 deliveries.
Western Suburbs comfortably defended their total, with opponents Sydney finishing on 287 for 8, handing Singh’s side a 196-run victory.
Singh was part of Australia’s Under-19 World Cup-winning team in February 2024, top-scoring with 55 in the final against India. Despite his impressive performances, he is yet to secure a rookie contract with state side New South Wales.
Many of his World Cup-winning teammates have already stepped into professional cricket. Sam Kontas has broken into the Australia Test side, while seamer Mahli Beardman was called up to the ODI squad for the tour of England. Oliver Peake, Harry Dixon and Tom Straker featured in Australia A’s tour of India, and Callum Vidler was also in the frame before injury ruled him out.
With others from that talented group already making their mark at higher levels, Singh’s stunning innings may be the catalyst for his own move into the professional ranks.
