Liberation War Minister Major (retd) Hafiz Uddin Ahmad (Bir Bikram) has been elected Speaker of the 13th Jatiya Sangsad.

In addition, State Minister for Land Kayser Kamal has been elected Deputy Speaker of the 13th Jatiya Sangsad.

Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain who is presiding over the first session of the 13th parliament, announced that only one nomination had been received for the post of the Speaker. The proposal was placed in parliament and passed with a majority of “yes” votes.

He also confirmed that only one nomination was submitted for the post of Deputy Speaker as well. The proposal was placed before the parliament and also passed with “yes” votes.

Earlier in the session, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman declared the name of Khandaker Mosharraf as presiding chair.

Following the announcement, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir extended full support on behalf of the party, while Deputy Leader of the Opposition Syed Abdullah Muhammad Taher voiced support on behalf of the opposition.

President administers oath to new speaker and deputy speaker

President Mohammed Sahabuddin administered the oath of office to the newly elected Speaker Major (retd) Hafiz Uddin Ahmad and Deputy Speaker Kayser Kamal on Thursday.

The swearing-in ceremony took place around noon at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban. Following the administration of the oath to the speaker, the president proceeded to swear in Deputy Speaker.
