Jamaat-e-Islami, Bangladesh Ameer Shafiqur Rahman said the growing popularity of Inqilab Moncho spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi had become intolerable to some quarters. He alleged that a conspiracy led to Hadi’s removal.
He made the remarks to journalists early Sunday morning after visiting Osman Hadi’s grave at the premises of the National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam Mausoleum at Dhaka University.
Shafiqur said, “Hadi’s growing popularity had become intolerable to some. That is why he was deliberately removed from the world through a planned conspiracy. However, killing revolutionaries can never suppress their ideals or spirit; rather, through the sacrifice of blood, that spirit spreads further and gains momentum.”
Speaking on justice for the killing, Shafiqur Rahman said Hadi’s killers were enemies of Bangladesh, as they murdered someone who fought for the country’s sovereignty and identity.
Referring to public dissatisfaction with the activities of the current government, he said, “What the government is doing has not yet fully satisfied the people. Hadi’s killers must be brought under the law immediately and exemplary punishment must be ensured.”
Recalling Hadi, the Jamaat ameer said, “Hadi never committed injustice or oppression against anyone. He always spoke of justice. He was even vocal about ensuring that no injustice was done to his own enemies. This moral grace and commitment to justice earned him a place in many hearts. Perhaps this love became unbearable for the attackers.”
Expressing hope that elections would be held in February, Shafiqur said, “From our side, all kinds of cooperation will be extended to the government for a fair, acceptable election that reflects the will of the people.”
Hadi was shot on 12 December while returning from election campaigning on Box Culvert Road in Bijoynagar. Witnesses said assailants fired at him from a moving motorcycle.
He was initially treated at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, then transferred to Evercare Hospital, and later airlifted to Singapore for advanced medical care. Hadi passed away last Thursday night while undergoing treatment.
A plane carrying Hadi’s body landed in Bangladesh on Friday evening, and it was kept at the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases morgue before his burial.
