Rockstar Games has quietly confirmed what fans have assumed for years: the official ending of Grand Theft Auto V is the widely preferred Deathwish storyline. The clarification arrives more than a decade after the game’s release and just ahead of the build-up to GTA 6.
The confirmation surfaces in the latest update to GTA Online, which brings Michael De Santa back into the fold in a new mission set, A Safehouse in the Hills, launching on December 10. Michael’s return, combined with references to the other protagonists, finally cements which of GTA 5’s three finales sits within official lore.
Players will recall that GTA 5 ends with Franklin facing three choices: kill Trevor, kill Michael, or defy the FIB and team up with both. The latter option, Deathwish, sees Franklin join forces with Trevor, Michael and Lamar to eliminate their enemies and walk away intact. It has long been regarded as the true ending by fans, largely because it allows all three leads to survive.
Rockstar had previously hinted at the trio’s fates through scattered cameos in GTA Online, though none of these appearances confirmed the canonical timeline outright. Franklin has appeared in recent content, but he survives all possible endings. Trevor’s presence was limited to early missions set before the events of GTA 5. Meanwhile, Michael had only been referenced indirectly.
The new update marks the first time Michael appears in the game’s present timeline, now pursuing his long-held ambition of becoming a film producer and still living with Amanda. Dialogue within the update also confirms Trevor is alive, albeit in typically chaotic form, with hints that he has reinvented himself as a sort of unhinged motivational figure.
With all three characters officially active in the same post-story timeline, Rockstar has effectively confirmed that Deathwish is canon. It is a conclusion many had already embraced, but one now acknowledged within the series itself as anticipation mounts for GTA 6.
