Mohammad Shorif Uddin, Vice-Chancellor of Green University of Bangladesh (GUB), has been elected a Fellow of the Bangladesh Academy of Sciences (BAS) in recognition of his longstanding contributions to science, technology, research, innovation, higher education and human welfare.
The prestigious fellowship is one of the most distinguished recognitions for scientists in Bangladesh and is a matter of immense pride and joy for the Green University family, reads a press release.
Shorif earned his undergraduate degree from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), his master’s degree from Shiga University, Japan, and his PhD from the Kyoto Institute of Technology, Japan.
He also conducted postdoctoral research at renowned laboratories and institutions in Singapore, Japan, Germany and China.
Throughout his distinguished career, he has made significant contributions to scientific and technological research, higher education and innovation.
In 2004, he invented the “Electronic Eye” technology to assist visually impaired people with mobility.
The invention received widespread international attention and was featured and acclaimed by leading international media outlets, including CNN, BBC, Reuters and The New York Times.
His major research areas include Computer Vision, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning and Agro-Biomedical Imaging.
He has published nearly 300 research papers on internationally recognised platforms, including Elsevier, Springer, IEEE and ACM. His research has received more than 7,500 citations on Google Scholar.
He holds two patents in science and research and is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB) and the Bangladesh Computer Society (BCS), as well as a Senior Member of IEEE. He also serves as an Associate Editor of the internationally recognised IEEE Access Journal.
The recognition of Shorif acknowledges his outstanding contributions to research, innovation and higher education.
