The government has decided to sell dressed broiler, milk, eggs, and beef at affordable prices through mobile outlets for 26 days during the upcoming month of Ramadan.
Fisheries and Livestock Adviser Farida Akhhtar announced this initiative during a press conference at the Secretariat on Tuesday, where she highlighted the sector’s achievements under the interim government.
Under this programme, dressed broiler will be priced at Tk 245 per kg, milk at Tk 80 per litre, eggs at Tk 8 per piece, and beef at Tk 650 per kg to ensure market stability and consumer relief.
The number of sales centres will be increased gradually, and permanent locations for mobile sales will be established in coordination with local entrepreneurs and stakeholders.
To support farmers, the government has reached a policy decision to provide a 20 per cent rebate on electricity bills and a Tk 100 crore subsidy to reduce production costs.
Fisheries and Conservation Regarding fisheries, the Adviser noted that six sanctuaries in the Padma-Meghna basin and a 7,000-square-kilometre area in the Bay of Bengal have been identified as breeding grounds.
Current conservation measures include a 22-day ban on river fishing and a 58-day ban at sea during breeding seasons.
Additionally, 669 sanctuaries are being maintained nationwide to preserve endangered indigenous fish species, including seven in Kaptai Lake, which currently faces risks from pollution and illegal encroachment.
The Halda River was officially declared a ‘Fisheries Heritage’ through a gazette published on 5 November 2025.
To protect its biodiversity, 16 specific conditions have been imposed. In 2025, approximately 14,000 kg of fish eggs were collected from the Halda, contributing over Tk 800 crore annually to the national economy.
Social Safety and Livestock Health In a move to bolster social protection, the number of registered fishermen receiving VGF (Vulnerable Group Feeding) support will be increased from 1,326,486 to 1.5 million.
For the first time, fishermen from the Sundarbans and Haor regions will be included in the VGF programme during fishing ban periods.
In the livestock sector, over 3.61 crore doses of PPR vaccine and nearly 46 lakh doses of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) vaccine have been administered. The government has also produced over 3.06 crore doses of vaccines for 17 types of cattle diseases and 53.95 crore doses for poultry.
Adviser Farida Akhhtar also mentioned the ministry’s first-ever participation in the COP-30 summit in Brazil, emphasising the need for coordinated efforts to mitigate climate change risks to fisheries and livestock.
The press conference was attended by Ministry Secretary Abu Taher Muhammad Jaber, Additional Secretary Imam Uddin, Director General of the Department of Fisheries Md Abdur Rouf, and Director General of the Department of Livestock Services Md Abu Sufian, among other officials.
