The government has decided to observe the death anniversary of Lalan Sai on 17 October every year, a cabinet division circular said on Tuesday.
The notification was signed by Cabinet Division’s deputy secretary Tania Afroz.
“Accordingly, all relevant ministries/divisions/agencies are hereby requested, as per instructions, to duly implement the said decision,” reads the circular.
Lalon Shah, widely revered as Lalon Sai, was a Bengali mystic, poet, and philosopher whose songs and teachings continue to inspire generations across Bangladesh and West Bengal.
Born into an obscure background, Lalon rejected rigid religious and caste identities, becoming one of the most prominent figures of the Baul tradition.
More than a century after his death, Lalon Sai remains a symbol of spiritual humanism and cultural resistance to social divisions.
