The government plans to introduce two new textbooks on sports and Bangladesh’s culture for Class IV students from the 2027 academic year as part of efforts to make learning more enjoyable for children.
Education and Primary and Mass Education Minister ANM Ehsanul Haque Milon announced the plan while speaking as the chief guest at a workshop on reviewing the “Learning through play” information book at a Dhaka hotel on Tuesday.
From 2027, the two new books titled “Sports” and “Bangladesh culture” will be added to the Class IV curriculum in primary schools, the minister said.
A textbook titled “Learning with happiness” is also being developed for Class VI students, while sports will be incorporated into the Class I curriculum from 2028, he added.
The minister said the government is taking several initiatives to encourage children to attend school, including school uniforms and the midday meal programme.
The midday meal programme will eventually be expanded to all upazilas across the country, he said.
Milon also stressed the importance of promoting traditional Bangladeshi games in educational institutions.
The minister acknowledged that a shortage of teachers remains a problem in educational institutions.
He proposed forming a “Retired teachers pool” by bringing retired teachers into the education system to help address the shortage.
“Everyone must work together under the leadership of the prime minister to build the Bangladesh of tomorrow,” he said.
State Minister for Primary and Mass Education Bobby Hajjaj, speaking as a special guest, said children need a joyful learning environment to develop an interest in education.
“Everyone needs to work together for the development of primary education,” he said.
State Minister for Youth and Sports Md Aminul Haque highlighted government initiatives to increase playgrounds across the country and support the development of talented athletes.
The workshop was chaired by Farid Ahmed, director general of the National Academy for Primary Education.
Director General of the Directorate of Primary Education Shahina Ferdousi and Save the Children Country Director Suman Sengupta were also present.
