The government will begin granting limited approval for onion imports from Sunday in an effort to keep the market stable, the Ministry of Commerce said in a press release issued on Saturday.
According to the release, 50 import permits (IPs) will be issued each day, with each permit allowing the import of up to 30 tonnes of onions.
The ministry said that only those importers who have applied for export permits since 1 August will be eligible to resubmit their applications for import approval.
The initiative will continue until further notice as part of the government’s measures to keep onion prices at a tolerable level.
