The government has taken initiatives to ensure social security allowances reach genuine beneficiaries through transparent and accountable mechanisms, State Minister for Social Welfare Barrister Farzana Sharmin Putul said on Wednesday.
“The success of the government’s various social security programmes largely depends on proper implementation at the field level,” she said at a press briefing after the first session of the fourth day of the Deputy Commissioner (DC) Conference at Osmani Memorial Auditorium.
The state minister said deputy commissioners and divisional commissioners play a key role as a bridge between the ministry and grassroots people, making transparency, accountability and integrity essential in their activities.
Allegations of irregularities in allowance recipient lists have surfaced in many cases, she said.
To address the issue, the government has formed a committee to re-verify the existing beneficiary lists.
Modern methods are being used to identify genuine recipients, while arrangements are underway to transfer benefits directly through the Government to Person (G-to-P) system, she said.
Sharmin said the government is gradually expanding the coverage of social security programmes.
However, the main objective is not only to provide allowances but also to make beneficiaries self-reliant and integrate them into the mainstream economy, she said.
A comprehensive plan has been taken to develop the skills of women and young people and connect them with employment opportunities, the state minister said.
She also asked deputy commissioners to remain vigilant so that no corruption or irregularities occur in the implementation of development projects.
If any problem or obstacle emerges at the field level, the ministry should be informed immediately, she said.
“Through proper coordination and sincere efforts, government services can be effectively delivered to the doorsteps of the people,” Sharmin said.
She urged all concerned to remain strict and alert to prevent corruption in the programmes.
