NCP convener and opposition chief whip Nahid Islam has warned that the government’s legitimacy would be questioned if the July Charter is not implemented while citing the old constitution.
He made the remarks while addressing the Barishal divisional Iftar and prayer gathering of NCP at Khulna District Stadium on Monday.
Speaking as the chief guest, Nahid Islam said the current government did not come to power without due process but rather derived its legitimacy from the July mass uprising.
“The interim government also gained legitimacy from that uprising. If the government fails to implement the July Charter by citing the old constitution, its legitimacy will become questionable,” he said.
Referring to the presence of leaders and activists from several political parties on the same platform, he added that the July uprising had created an opportunity for different political forces to unite.
“We are able to gather here today because of the sacrifices of hundreds of martyrs. We want to implement the July Charter together in parliament and ensure the execution of all directives of the interim government,” he said.
Among the invited guests at the event were Mia Golam Parwar, secretary general of Jamaat-e-Islami, and Nazrul Islam Manju, administrator of Khulna City Corporation, along with leaders of the 11-party alliance in the Khulna division.
NCP chief organiser (South) Hasnat Abdullah, chief coordinator Nasiruddin Patwari, Jatiya Jubo Shakhti convener Tarikul Islam, and Zahid Ahsan, president of Jatiya Chhatra Shakti, were also present, among others.
