Energy and Mineral Resources Division (EMRD) under the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources has launched a pilot programme for a QR code-based mobile application titled “Fuel Pass,” aiming to bring greater transparency and discipline to the country’s fuel distribution system.
The initiative is being implemented by the Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation to modernise the country’s fuel supply system and reduce inefficiencies associated with manual distribution, according to a press release.
As part of the initial rollout, the app is being tested at two filling stations in the capital-Trust Filling Station in Tejgaon and Sonar Bangla Filling Station in Asad Gate-where it is currently available for motorcycle owners and riders.
Authorities said the system will be expanded nationwide and extended to all types of vehicles following a successful pilot phase.
Officials observed that the existing manual process has contributed to delays and operational challenges, with long queues frequently forming at filling stations despite adequate fuel supplies. Instances of individuals collecting fuel multiple times by rejoining queues have also led to artificial shortages.
The “Fuel Pass” system aims to address these issues through automation and real-time monitoring. It will be integrated with the central database of the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority, enabling authorities to maintain closer oversight of fuel allocation and distribution.
Users will be able to access fuel by scanning a unique QR code linked to their registration, while also viewing their allocated quota.
Filling station operators, meanwhile, will manage fuel distribution digitally through the platform.
A centralised dashboard will allow real-time monitoring of fuel supply across the country.
Provision has also been made for individuals without smartphones, who can register via a web portal and print their QR codes for use at fuel stations.
Officials believe the initiative will improve accountability, minimise irregularities and wastage, and ensure more efficient fuel management, particularly during periods of high demand.
The division expressed hope that, with stakeholder support, the system can be quickly scaled up to strengthen the country’s overall energy security.
