The government has constituted a 9-member taskforce comprising leading urban planners and academics to recommend ways of integrating spatial planning into the country’s broader development framework and to draft strategies for formulating and executing a National Spatial Plan.
An official circular issued by the Planning Commission confirmed that the taskforce will be headed by Dr A T M Nurul Amin, emeritus professor of the Asian Institute of Technology and honorary member of the Bangladesh Institute of Planners (BIP).
Other members include Professor Dr Selim Rashid, emeritus professor of the University of Illinois and honorary member of BIP; Professor Dr Adil Mohammed Khan, president of BIP; Sheikh Muhammad Mehedi Ahsan, general secretary of BIP; Dr Farhana Ahmed from the Center for Environmental and Geographic Information Services (CEGIS); A K M Riaz Uddin, member of BIP; Syed Shahriar Amin, vice-president of BIP; and Professor Musleh Uddin Hasan from the Department of Urban and Regional Planning at the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET).
A representative from the General Economics Division (GED) of the Planning Commission will serve as the member secretary of the taskforce.
Under the terms of reference, the body will prepare and submit a detailed report within two months after engaging with relevant stakeholders. It will also be empowered to co-opt additional members when required.
The General Economics Division (GED) of the Planning Commission will provide both technical and secretarial support to facilitate the taskforce’s activities.
