The interim cabinet has granted approval to the proposed Supreme Court Secretariat Ordinance 2025, a legislative measure designed to create an autonomous administrative body for the nation’s highest court, thereby securing the judiciary’s complete independence.

This approval came during a session of the Advisory Council, chaired by Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus at his office in Tejgaon, Dhaka on Thursday.

“Today, we completed the full implementation of the verdict in the Masdar Hossain case and the final step for establishing the full independence of the judiciary,” Law Adviser Asif Nazrul told a press conference at the Foreign Service Academy.

Asif Nazrul mentioned that the Advisory Council had previously given its approval, in-principle consent to this draft law, stating that the creation of a distinct secretariat for the Supreme Court was a suggestion put forward by both the Judicial Reform Commission and the National Consensus Commission.

The law adviser added that in the talks held by the National Consensus Commission, all participating groups agreed on the necessity of a separate Supreme Court secretariat to guarantee the judiciary’s full autonomy.

He noted that for the past two to three decades, the aspiration for a separate Supreme Court secretariat to ensure the judiciary’s absolute independence has been a persistent sentiment within Bangladesh’s civil society.

“Today is a historic day for us. Many political parties have given many assurances, many words. Ultimately, we have now come to a good place,” he said.
