Bangladesh’s Gourab Singh and Abdul Jahir Tanvir moved into the men’s doubles final on Thursday night, assuring themselves of at least a silver medal after a strong comeback win in the semi-finals.
The first men’s doubles semi-final at the Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Indoor Stadium saw Gourab and Tanvir overcome compatriots Al Amin Jumar and Moazzem Hossain Ahidul in three sets. After losing the opening set 19–21, they bounced back convincingly to take the next two sets 21–8 and 21–15, sealing a place in the final.
By reaching the semi-finals earlier in the day, Gourab and Tanvir had already guaranteed a bronze medal, along with two other Bangladeshi pairs. Their victory in the evening session, however, elevated them to the final and ensured an upgrade to at least silver.
Al Amin Jumar and Moazzem Hossain Ahidul came into the match with recent success behind them, having claimed bronze at the Yonex Canadian Challenge in Toronto only a few days earlier. That form did not translate fully on home soil, though. The pair had earlier failed to reach the quarter-finals of the Yonex-Sunrise Bangladesh International Challenge and, despite progressing to the last four of the ongoing Yonex-Sunrise Bangladesh International Series, had to settle for bronze once again.
In the semi-final, Gourab and Tanvir struggled initially but turned the contest around emphatically in the second set, dominating rallies and dictating the pace. In the decider, Jumar and Ahidul were unable to recover, as Gourab and Tanvir maintained control to close out the match.
Earlier, Jumar and Ahidul had reached the semi-finals by defeating England’s Wang Yu Hang and Australia’s Jueyi Ji 21–14, 25–23 in the quarter-finals. Gourab and Tanvir, meanwhile, booked their last-four place with a straight-sets 21–15, 21–15 win over Vietnam’s Than Dat and Duc Nguyen.
In the mixed doubles, Malaysia’s Wee Yi Tarn and Tan Zhing Hui advanced to the final with a dominant 21–9, 21–9 victory over England’s Wang Yu Hang and Cho Wai Lam. The other semi-final saw Malaysia’s Clarissa Sun and Satu Asrah beat Thailand’s Kunlapat Lothong and Pattharin Warisrisakul 21–14, 21–13.
The finals of five events will be held on Friday, with play set to begin from 2:00 pm.
