Ecuador defeated Germany 2-1 in their 2026 World Cup Group E finale at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami on Friday, with Gonzalo Plata’s 78th-minute strike completing a comeback that keeps their tournament alive. Germany finish top of the group. Ecuador could go through as one of the best third-placed sides on four points.
Germany made the perfect start. Leroy Sané finished inside two minutes after a high press opened Ecuador up immediately. Julian Nagelsmann’s side looked sharp in those opening exchanges, moving through the lines quickly with Joshua Kimmich pushing into midfield from right back and Felix Nmecha and Aleksandar Pavlović controlling the centre.
Ecuador refused to be overrun. Sebastian Beccacece had identified the wings as his route into the game, and Nilson Angulo and John Yeboah gave Germany’s full-backs no rest. Moisés Caicedo switched play consistently to get them in behind, and the approach paid off in the ninth minute when Angulo struck from long range, finding space in Germany’s defensive shape to level the score.
Germany lost their grip on the match from that point. They gave the ball away in dangerous areas, struggled to recreate the press that had brought the opener and left space on the counter. Ecuador grew into those gaps and managed the second half with discipline, continuing to threaten on the flanks without overcommitting.
Plata settled it in the 78th minute, converting to give Ecuador the lead for the first time. Germany had introduced Florian Wirtz and Kai Havertz but the changes did not shift the pattern of the game. Deniz Undav, Jamal Musiala and the rest of Germany’s attack found Willian Pacho, Joel Ordóñez and Piero Hincapié in firm control at the back throughout.
Ecuador’s four points place them among the contenders for one of the eight best third-place berths that earn a spot in the Round of 32.
