Spain and Barcelona star Lamine Yamal has expressed full confidence in his country’s chances of winning the 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting that France are no stronger than Spain.
The 18-year-old forward dismissed the idea that Didier Deschamps’ side are favourites and pointed to Spain’s recent record against France as evidence of his belief.
“No team can be called unbeatable. France are not better than us; they haven’t been able to beat us since the European Championship. Right now, no one is ahead of us and there is no clear favorite,” Yamal said.
Spain defeated France in the UEFA Euro 2024 semi-finals, and Yamal believes that victory proved his side can compete with any of the world’s top teams. He said his only objective at the World Cup is to lift the trophy.
The young winger also spoke about his personality off the pitch, saying he rarely lets emotions get the better of him.
“I never get overly nervous and I don’t cry. I’ve only cried when I saw my mother’s tears. Even if we win the World Cup, it’s certain I won’t cry, it’s impossible,” he said.
Yamal added that he would not celebrate a World Cup triumph by getting a tattoo because of his religious beliefs.
Under coach Luis de la Fuente, Spain have built a talented young squad, with Yamal emerging as one of its brightest stars. His bold comments reflect the confidence within the Spanish camp as they aim to win the World Cup in North America.
