Four workers died after reportedly inhaling toxic gas while working inside a septic tank of an under-construction building in Sarail upazila of Brahmanbaria on Wednesday afternoon.
The incident occurred in Galania village under Kalikachha union of the upazila.
The deceased were identified as Imam Hossain, 30, Hridoy Mia, 25, Mehedi, 22, and Arman, 30.
Of them, three were residents of Golania village, while one hailed from Dhoronti village in the same upazila.
According to police and local sources, Hridoy and Mehedi initially entered the septic tank of a house owned by Ali Mia for cleaning or maintenance work.
When they failed to come out, Arman and Imam subsequently entered the tank in an attempt to rescue them.
All four were later found dead inside the septic tank, with officials suspecting toxic gas inhalation as the cause.
Fire Service personnel recovered the bodies from the tank at around 5:30pm after being informed of the incident.
Faruk Ahmed, deputy director of Brahmanbaria Fire Service and Civil Defence, said the deaths were likely caused by exposure to toxic gas, adding that the exact cause will be confirmed after autopsy reports.
Sarail Police Station Officer-in-Charge Manzur Kader Bhuiyan confirmed the incident and said police promptly reached the scene, assisted in recovery efforts, and sent the bodies to Brahmanbaria District Sadar Hospital for post-mortem.
