Hansi Flick has confirmed he will extend his contract as Barcelona manager until 2028, committing his future to the club days after guiding them to their 29th LaLiga title with a victory over arch-rivals Real Madrid.
The 61-year-old German, whose current deal was due to expire in June 2027, will sign a one-year extension with an option to prolong his tenure further. Barcelona moved to an unassailable 91 points with three games still remaining, sealing the championship on Sunday.
Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Flick was candid about the timing of the announcement, acknowledging that the past few days had been deeply personal as well as professionally triumphant. His father passed away on Sunday, the same day his side clinched the title.
“I will let you know, sorry, the last few days I have had different things to do,” he said. “Of course, I am really happy about this contract extension. They have given me and my team the confidence to work one or two more years, so for me it is like that.”
Flick also addressed the relatively short length of the deal, suggesting it suited both parties well.
“I think a lot of coaches would be happy if they get a contract of three, four or five years, but in Barca’s case it is good to limit it. I really appreciate it. We go to 2028 and then we will see if everything is right, and if so, we can decide on one more year. The club has the right, and I have the right. I think it is a good deal.”
Flick joined Barcelona in 2024 on a two-year deal, arriving eager to rebuild his reputation after being dismissed as Germany head coach in September 2023. The turnaround has been swift and striking. Under his management, Barcelona have won back-to-back LaLiga titles, the 2024-25 Copa del Rey and successive Spanish Super Cup trophies.
The one blemish on an otherwise outstanding record has been the Champions League, where Barcelona were eliminated at the quarter-final stage this season by Atletico Madrid. Flick was clear that rectifying that remains the priority.
“Everyone has this dream to win the Champions League. We will try again. That is what I can say. I am grateful for the confidence they have given me to work here for more years.”
He also reflected on the bond that has developed between himself, the club and the city, particularly in the wake of recent events.
“In the last few days they showed me that I am here in the right place, and I really appreciate what they give me, all the people, to me and my team and my family. For next season, it is also a big commitment for us to work harder, even harder than this season, to reach the best level and to win titles. This is normal for Barca.”
Barcelona face Deportivo Alaves on Wednesday before concluding their league campaign with two further fixtures.
