Barcelona’s 2-1 victory over Atletico Madrid at the Wanda Metropolitano on Saturday told only part of the story. A controversial VAR intervention, a red card shown and then rescinded, a brief sideline dispute between Hansi Flick and Lamine Yamal, and Diego Simeone’s barely concealed fury ensured the match will be remembered for far more than its scoreline.
The flashpoint arrived four minutes into the second half. Barcelona defender Gerard Martin lunged into a challenge on Atletico’s Thiago Almada, and referee Mateo Busquets produced a red card without hesitation. Simeone leapt from his dugout in celebration. His joy, however, was short-lived.
After consulting with VAR, Busquets reversed his decision and downgraded the card to yellow. Martin stayed on the pitch. Simeone’s smile disappeared.
Flick was unequivocal in his support of the final call. “It did not deserve a red card. In my opinion, Gerard touched the ball first. There was no foul,” he said at the post-match press conference.
Simeone saw it entirely differently. The Atletico coach argued the original decision was correct and used the occasion to call for greater consistency in how such incidents are handled. “I was informed about it. We saw something similar in a Betis-Rayo match before, and the committee later confirmed it was worthy of a red card. The tackle was late, on the foot and the ankle. The incident is clear. We will need to wait for our committee’s explanation so that these situations are clearer in the future.”
When asked how much the reversal had affected the outcome, Simeone was pointed but restrained. “We can talk about two completely different halves. In the first half we played very well. Both teams had chances. Then Nico’s red card happened. But I do not want to talk about the Martin situation. Whatever we say, nothing will change. When something is this clear, words are unnecessary.”
Atletico had taken the lead through Giuliano Simeone, the coach’s son, on 39 minutes before Marcus Rashford equalised three minutes later, converting with the aid of a Dani Olmo assist. It was only Rashford’s third league start since January.
Atletico were reduced to ten men in first-half stoppage time when Nicolas Gonzalez was sent off, and despite defending resolutely for long periods, they were undone in the 87th minute when Robert Lewandowski prodded home from close range to seal Barcelona’s victory.
The result leaves Barcelona in commanding position at the top of La Liga. After 30 matches, they have won 25, drawn one, and lost four, accumulating 76 points. Real Madrid sit second on 69 points, having lost 2-1 at Mallorca on Saturday, while Villarreal are third on 58 and Atletico fourth on 57. All three have played 30 matches. Barcelona, in short, have one hand firmly on the title.
