At least five people were killed and two others injured after an explosion triggered a fire at a defence company facility in South Korea on Monday.
The incident took place at a worksite operated by Hanwha Aerospace in the city of Daejeon. The facility is one of the company’s key centres for developing large-scale propellants and surface-to-surface weapons systems.
Authorities said they have yet to determine the cause of the explosion. Investigators have launched an inquiry into the incident.
Emergency official Yoon Seong-su said the site is classified as a government security facility.
Medical official Kim Ju-yeon said one of the two injured victims remains in critical condition. Authorities have not yet confirmed the identities of those killed.
Hanwha Aerospace is one of South Korea’s leading defence manufacturers. Its Daejeon facility plays a significant role in the country’s weapons development programmes.
