For the first time in Bangladesh’s history, authorities are set to conduct a nationwide vessel census to create a comprehensive database of all powered vessels operating across the country’s maritime, coastal and inland waterways.
The ‘Vessel Census 2026’ will begin on Thursday and continue until 29 August as part of an initiative to make the country’s shipping sector safer, more organised and data driven.
The census is being conducted jointly by the Department of Shipping under the Ministry of Shipping and the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) under the project titled “Creating a Vessel Database and Enhancing Capacity in Vessel Management”.
Officials said the initiative aims to collect updated information on the number, types, ownership and registration status of powered vessels across the country.
The information gathered through the census will be used to prepare an integrated database, which will support future planning, improve vessel management, strengthen safety measures and help policymakers make informed decisions for the shipping sector.
The authorities expect the census to provide the first reliable statistical picture of Bangladesh’s vessel sector, including details of vessels operating in rivers, coastal areas and sea routes.
The database is also expected to improve the country’s vessel registration system, enhance waterway management and help identify gaps in maritime safety.
The Department of Shipping and BBS have urged vessel owners, operators, workers and other stakeholders to cooperate with census officials and provide accurate information.
Officials said the success of the census depends largely on active participation from those involved in the shipping sector.
The initiative comes at a time when Bangladesh’s waterways continue to play a vital role in passenger and cargo movement, but challenges over vessel management, safety and reliable data remain.
The Vessel Census 2026 is expected to provide the foundation for a more structured and modern approach to managing the country’s growing shipping sector.
