A fire broke out at Gobra Bazar in Narail Sadar early Thursday, reducing three business establishments to ashes and causing an estimated loss of around Tk 30 lakh, according to locals.
One businessman, identified as Saiful Islam, sustained burn injuries and was admitted to Narail Sadar Hospital. The incident occurred around 5:30am.
Masud Rana, Station Officer of Narail Fire Service, said grocery shop owners Sanjay Das, Shailen Das, and Saiful Islam, as well as sweet shop owner Abul Bashar, suffered damages in the blaze.
He added that goods worth around Tk 5 lakh were destroyed, while fire service personnel managed to save merchandise valued at approximately Tk 11 lakh.
The fire is assumed to have originated from an electrical short circuit. However, locals suspect that the blaze might have started after someone fell asleep while burning mosquito coils inside one of the shops.
Locals first noticed the fire and rushed to extinguish it before firefighters arrived at the scene. Fire service teams managed to douse the blaze after about an hour of effort. Panic spread among traders and residents of the market area.
