The fire broke out at a cotton warehouse in Tongi, Gazipur, has been brought under control.
No casualties have been reported so far.
The Fire Service officials said the blaze was brought under control around 1:30pm on Saturday. The fire erupted on Shahid Sundar Ali Road in Milgate, Tongi, around 11:30am, they said.
On information, seven units from Tongi, Kurmitola, and Uttara Fire Service are currently working to put out the fire.
Locals said the fire suddenly erupted at Abdus Sattar’s cotton warehouse in the morning. Within moments, the flames spread to nearby warehouses owned by Shahidul Islam, Raju, Abdul Mannan, Shahin, and China. Raw materials for cotton production, furniture, and machinery stored in the warehouses were destroyed.
Business owners alleged that firefighting efforts were hampered due to a shortage of water.
Mohammad Shahin Alam, senior officer of Tongi Fire Service, said, “There is no water body nearby. That’s why the firefighters faced difficulties in putting out the blaze.”
