The immortal charm of Manna Dey’s ‘Coffee House’ is being reimagined for a new generation, not through melody this time, but on the silver screen.
A feature film inspired by the iconic song is set to begin shooting on October 7, unfolding across the misty landscapes of North Bengal and the bustling lanes of Kolkata.
Produced by Suan Silver Screen, the project reunites acclaimed actresses Roopa Ganguly and Dolon Roy after a long hiatus. Their performances will anchor a story that dares to look beyond the wistful verses of Dey’s classic, exploring what became of the six friends whose laughter once filled the coffee house: Sujata, Rama, Nikhilesh, D’Souza, Amal and Moidul.
In this cinematic continuation, Sujata, now living abroad, returns to India, only to vanish mysteriously in an old tea-planter’s bungalow. Her granddaughter Aheri, visiting from Britain, uncovers a hidden world through an old diary and faded letters, piecing together the tangled emotions and forgotten dreams of her grandmother’s circle.
What begins as a sentimental journey soon turns into a haunting exploration of memory, loss and the relentless passage of time.
Roopa Ganguly stars as the elder Sujata, while Dolon Roy and Priyanka Bhattacharjee portray the two phases of Rama’s life. Joining them are Shubashish Ghosh from Mumbai, along with Soumya Mukherjee and Anuradha Mukherjee.
In a poignant tribute, Arijit Singh will reinterpret Manna Dey’s legendary Coffee House anthem for the film, ensuring that the spirit of friendship and fading time that once echoed through the song will now find a new home on screen.
