FIFA has banned Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes for 10 international matches following the clash between Argentina and Spain players after the 2026 World Cup final.
FIFA announced the punishment on Friday. Paredes also received a fine of $90,000 for his role in the incident.
The trouble started after Spain beat Argentina 1-0 in the final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on July 19.
Paredes grabbed Spain defender Eric Garcia by the throat during the clash. He also wrestled Gavi to the ground while still holding his substitute bib.
The incident then grew as more players from both teams became involved.
FIFA also punished several other players following the fight.
Argentina defender Nahuel Molina received a seven match suspension. FIFA also fined him $90,000.
Thiago Almada received a one match ban and a fine of $30,000. Spain midfielder Pablo Martin Paez Gavira was also suspended for one match and fined $30,000.
Argentina also received a punishment over the incident. FIFA ordered the national team to play their next two home matches behind closed doors.
However, FIFA suspended one of those matches from the punishment. As a result, Argentina will initially have to play one home game without supporters.
Paredes, who plays for Boca Juniors, faces the heaviest individual punishment following the clashes.
The sanctions come more than a month after Spain defeated Argentina to lift the World Cup trophy in New Jersey.
