Two children drowned in a waterlogged jute field while gathering water lilies near Parkhajura Baor (oxbow lake) in Manirampur upazila of Jashore on Saturday.
The deceased were identified as Yasmin Khatun, 6, daughter of Oliar Rahman, and Jisan Hossain, 10, son of Mofizur Rahman. Both children were residents of Hazrakati village under Moshwimonagar Union in the upazila and were students at the local Hazrakati Mohila Alim Madrasah. Yasmin was a student of Class I, while Jisan was in Class IV.
Rajganj Police Investigation Centre In-Charge Md Kamal Hossain confirmed the tragic deaths of the two children.
According to Abul Hasan, a member of the Hazrakati Union Parishad (UP), the incident occurred at around 11:30am when four to five children went down to gather water lilies in the waterlogged jute field adjacent to the Hazrakati Daspara Mor crossing, near the edge of the Parkhajura Baor.
“At one point, Yasmin drowned in the water,” Abul Hasan said. “Jisan went to rescue her, but he also drowned, and neither of them could surface again.”
Locals subsequently rescued both children and rushed them to the nearby Keshabpur Upazila Health Complex, where the emergency department’s on-duty doctor, Moazzem Hossain, declared them dead.
Expressing deep shock, Abul Kalam Azad, a teacher at Hazrakati Mohila Alim Madrasah, confirmed that both the deceased were students of their institution. He added that a shadow of grief has descended upon the teachers and students at their premature and tragic deaths.
