The World Cup is 50 days away. But the build up is not smooth. FIFA and the host nations face strong criticism. Many issues have come up already.
The United States will host the event with Canada and Mexico. A recent war has added more tension. The United States and Israel launched attacks on Iran in February. There is now a fragile ceasefire. But Iran’s place in the tournament is still not clear.
Iran’s team is getting ready. But the final call will come from the government and the National Security Council. They will review player safety in the US. Iran had earlier said it may not take part. It raised concerns about security after comments from President Donald Trump. The Iranian federation asked FIFA to move its matches to Mexico. FIFA rejected that request. FIFA chief Gianni Infantino said Iran must take part. Iran is set to play all group games in the US.
Fans are also angry about high costs. Ticket prices have gone up a lot. Many feel the event is becoming too expensive. Sales for big matches have slowed. Some fans are staying away.
Transport costs have also gone up in some cities. A train ride from New York to MetLife Stadium now costs about $150. This is much higher than usual. Local leaders and FIFA have blamed each other for the price. Travel to other stadiums is also costly in some areas.
Some cities have kept prices low. Los Angeles and Philadelphia will not change fares. Kansas City will offer a $15 return trip. Houston has added more buses and trains. It will keep fares low for fans.
Security is another big concern. In Mexico, a gun attack on tourists has raised fear. The incident took place near the Teotihuacan pyramids. One person died and many were injured. The government has promised stronger security for the World Cup.
In the US, immigration policy is also under focus. Plans for mass deportation have raised concern. There are fears that fans could face problems. FIFA has been asked to speak with the US government. Officials want to make sure fans feel safe during the event.
Despite the issues, the tournament will start on June 11. Mexico will face South Africa in the opening match. But many questions remain before the first ball is kicked.
