A father surrendered to police after killing his drug-addicted son in Jhalakathi early Saturday.
The incident took place around 3:00am in Chhonauta village under Ward No. 4 of Amua Union in the upazila.
The accused, Abdul Barek Khan, later called the national emergency number 999 and informed police after the killing.
Police and locals said the victim, Mehedi Hasan, had been addicted to drugs for a long time. He frequently assaulted his parents and injured local residents with sharp weapons, creating fear in the area.
On the day of the incident, Mehedi demanded Tk3 lakh from his father and vandalised household items.
Later in the evening, he bought a machete from the market and returned home. He allegedly threatened to slaughter his parents at night if the money was not given.
Fearing for their safety, Abdul Barek asked his wife, Khushi Begum, to sleep in a separate room. Later at night, he attacked and killed his son with a sharp weapon.
On information, Kathalia police went to the scene, detained Abdul Barek and recovered the body.
The victim’s mother has filed a case against her husband in connection with the incident.
Assistant Superintendent of Police (Kathalia–Rajapur Circle) Md Shah Alam visited the scene. Officer-in-Charge Abu Naser Raihan and a police team were also present.
Police said the accused killed his son after being overwhelmed by prolonged suffering due to the son’s drug addiction. A case has been filed and an investigation is underway.
