A father was tragically killed by his son over a dispute about buying him a motorcycle in Kalai, Joypurhat on Saturday.
In a bid to protect him, his mother and sister were seriously injured.
The victim, Akkas Ali, 56, was attacked by his 28-year-old son, Golap Hossain, who struck him with a bamboo stick, a knife, and a sickle.
Kalai police officer-in-charge Rafiqul Islam confirmed the incident. Akkas Ali died while being taken to Bogura’s Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital. His wife, Abeda Begum, and their daughter were seriously injured and admitted to the same hospital, with the mother’s condition described as critical.
The incident occurred in Bofolgari village in Kalai Upazila. Police and local residents quickly arrested the assailant, Golap Hossain, at the scene. Joypurhat Assistant Superintendent of Police (Circle), Tuhin Reza, visited the site on Saturday night.
According to police and local sources, Golap Hossain had been demanding that his father buy him a motorcycle using money earned from selling potatoes.
Akkas Ali repeatedly refused, leading to repeated arguments over several days. On Saturday, just before Iftar, the dispute escalated, and Golap attacked his father with multiple weapons. When his mother and sister tried to intervene, he assaulted them as well.
“The son has been arrested on charges of murdering his father. We will take legal action based on the investigation. The case is currently under formal legal procedure,” OC Rafiqul Islam said.
