Filmmaker Mostofa Sarwar Farooki has sparked excitement among viewers by hinting at a third instalment in his popular political satire franchise, following the success of television series ‘420’ and its sequel ‘840’.
The director raised the possibility on Sunday night after sharing a photograph with actor Mosharraf Karim, who played a leading role in the original series. The picture fuelled speculation that the two were working together on a new project.
Adding to the curiosity, Farooki wrote: “‘420’ is done. And so is ‘840’. Is it time for ‘1680’? What do you guys think?”
His post has led fans to believe that ‘1680’ could be the next chapter, with Mosharraf Karim returning to the franchise.
However, Farooki has yet to confirm whether the project will take the form of a television series or a feature film. The previous instalment, ‘840’, was released as a feature-length film.
Asked about the project, Farooki declined to offer further details. “I have shared everything I wanted to say on Facebook. I don’t want to disclose anything more at this moment,” he said.
Released in 2007, ‘420’ followed two thieves who arrive in Dhaka and gradually become involved in politics.
The political satire struck a chord with viewers and featured Mosharraf Karim, Nusrat Imrose Tisha, Lutfor Rahman George, Sohel Khan and Marzuk Russell, among others.
Farooki returned to the story in 2024 with ‘840’, which explored the lives of ousted political leaders. The film featured Nasir Uddin Khan, Fazlur Rahman Babu, Shahriar Nazim Joy, Marzuk Russell and Zakia Bari Mamo.
With Farooki now teasing ‘1680’, audiences are waiting to see whether the director will reunite with Mosharraf Karim for another chapter of the franchise.
