National Board of Revenue (NBR) Chairman Ahsan Habib has urged tax officials to ensure hassle-free services for taxpayers while maintaining integrity and professionalism in revenue collection.

Ensuring taxpayer-friendly services and boosting revenue collection are the key priorities of the current NBR, he said.

He made the remarks on Tuesday at a reception and orientation programme for newly appointed assistant tax commissioners at the NBR headquarters in Dhaka.

The Bangladesh Civil Service (Taxes) Association organised the event at the building’s multipurpose hall.

Addressing the new officials, Ahsan Habib said they must make proper use of the authority and opportunities entrusted to them by the government.

“Accepting challenges is the greatest courage in life,” he said, urging the officials to work with discipline and a strong sense of responsibility.

The NBR chairman said decisions taken by the organisation were collective, not those of any individual. He called on officials to work together to uphold the institution’s image.

He said automation and online services had significantly reduced harassment and irregularities in the tax system.

Around 50 lakh taxpayers filed their income tax returns in the last fiscal year, he said, expressing optimism that the number of online return submissions would increase further in the current fiscal year.

The chairman also stressed the need for officials to maintain absolute integrity and professionalism in revenue collection.

He said improving revenue mobilisation required service-oriented behaviour towards taxpayers and an environment free from harassment.

Senior leaders of the BCS (Taxes) Association, NBR members and the newly appointed assistant tax commissioners attended the programme.

Speakers urged the newly appointed officials to discharge their responsibilities with utmost dedication, integrity and professionalism to help strengthen the country’s economy.
