BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has alleged on Friday that there is a conspiracy to eliminate moderate politics and bring back extremism, warning that the plot poses a serious threat not only to democracy, but also to the country’s future.
Speaking as the chief guest at the National Press Club during the book launch of “Raktakto July” by Syeda Fatema Salam, he said, “This conspiracy must be countered to protect both democracy and the nation’s future.”
Fakhrul stressed that without elections, the country could suffer severe damage, and there is a real danger of fascism returning.
He said restoring democracy through a free and fair election is now the foremost priority and expressed hope that such an election will be held in February next year.
The leader called for a politically coordinated approach in formulating the electoral roadmap, noting that while differences exist among parties, the current environment is creating confusion among the public. “All political reforms in the country have been initiated by BNP,” he asserted, adding that former president Ziaur Rahman laid the foundation for multi-party democracy from a one-party system.
Fakhrul urged BNP leaders and supporters to work in unity to meet the people’s expectations and ensure that democracy serves public welfare.
