BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Wednesday condemned the recent attack on baul singers, describing it as a “disgraceful act by extremist religious elements.”
Speaking to reporters after inaugurating the Thakurgaon District BNP office at 3:30pm, Fakhrul said, “The assault on the bauls is reprehensible, and we strongly denounce it.”
He highlighted that bauls are an integral part of Bangladesh’s cultural heritage, embodying the folk traditions of rural Bengal through their music.
“Attacking them is an act of religious fanaticism,” he added, urging authorities to conduct a fair and thorough investigation into the incident.
Fakhrul also expressed concern over recent fire incidents in Korail slum, which have affected thousands of impoverished residents.
He described the disasters as a “severe blow” to vulnerable communities and called on the government to ensure immediate rehabilitation for the victims.
He stressed that those found responsible for the incidents must face justice. When asked whether the fires could be part of a larger conspiracy, Fakhrul dismissed the idea, citing structural weaknesses and mismanagement as the main causes.
He said, “Negligence by officials in factories and garment units, inadequate fire safety measures, and failure to enforce laws are behind these kind of tragedies.”
Fakhrul added that proper law enforcement and fire safety systems could prevent or control such accidents in the future.
Earlier, Fakhrul inaugurated the Thakurgaon District BNP office, with party leaders including District BNP President Mirza Faisal Amin, General Secretary Paygam Ali, and members of various affiliated organisations in attendance.
