Agriculture, Food, Fisheries and Livestock Minister Mohammad Amin Ur Rashid on Monday warned that excessive use of fertilisers has increased soil acidity beyond normal levels, damaging soil quality and raising production costs.
He made the remark while chairing a meeting to review the Annual Development Programme (ADP) at the ministry’s conference room at the Secretariat.
Highlighting agricultural challenges, the minister said, “Restoring soil fertility and protecting soil health remain essential to sustaining production.” He noted, “Excessive use of fertilisers has increased soil acidity beyond normal levels, which damages soil quality and raises production costs.” He instructed officials to take prompt and effective measures to reduce soil acidity and minimise its impact.
During the meeting, the minister also warned that no one will be spared if corruption or irregularities are found in development projects. He said, “All projects must prioritise public welfare in both planning and implementation.”
He stressed, “Authorities must identify the reasons behind projects that failed to achieve expected outcomes and hold those responsible accountable.” He also called for long-term planning in future initiatives with a focus on public interest.
The meeting was informed that implementation progress of the ministry’s ADP stands at 42.18 per cent in the current fiscal year.
Agriculture Secretary Rafiqul I Mohammed, along with senior officials of the ministry and heads of subordinate departments and institutions, attended the meeting.
