Michael Eneramo died on Friday after collapsing during a friendly match in Kaduna, with the Nigeria Football Federation stating that he appeared to suffer cardiac arrest five minutes into the second half. Officials confirmed the incident based on early medical reports.
Eneramo played the full first half before the collapse early in the second period. Medical staff responded after he lost consciousness on the pitch. Initial assessments have pointed to a cardiac event as the likely cause.
“This is devastating. I am short of words at this moment,” said Mohammed Sanusi. He expressed the federation’s immediate reaction to the incident and acknowledged its impact. “I can only pray that God will grant him eternal rest and also grant his loved ones and the Nigeria football family the fortitude to bear the loss.” He addressed the wider effect on players, officials and supporters.
Eneramo earned 10 international caps for Nigeria and made his debut in a friendly against Jamaica in 2009. He built his club career across Tunisia and Turkey, where he played for multiple teams and contributed to title-winning campaigns.
He gained recognition at Esperance Sportive de Tunis, where supporters nicknamed him “the Tank” for his physical style and direct play. His performances helped the club secure silverware during his time there.
