Despite rumours of his death, former Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed has been moved from life support to the Coronary Care Unit (CCU) as his health continues to improve, hospital officials and family sources confirmed on Saturday.
About his condition, doctors say the veteran politician is now recognising family members, speaking and taking food orally. Tofail Ahmed, a former DUCSU vice president, is a member of the Advisory Council of the Awami League.
Square Hospital’s Chief Operating Officer Mohammad Esam Ebne Yousuf Siddique told TIMES of Bangladesh that Tofail Ahmed’s condition is improving gradually. “He has been shifted from life support to the CCU as part of his recovery,” he said.
Tofail Ahmed was admitted to Square Hospital on 27 September with several age-related complications. As his health worsened, doctors placed him on life support.
His brother-in-law, former upazila chairman Abul Kalam Azad, said family members are now able to see him regularly. Dr Touhiduzzaman Tuhin, the hospital’s cardiologist and Tofail Ahmed’s only son-in-law, is also closely monitoring his condition.
Family members staying with him at the hospital said his health has shown “satisfactory improvement,” adding that he was moved from life support to the CCU two weeks ago.
