Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police has arrested former Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police and ex-Meherpur Superintendent of Police (SP) AKM Nahidul Islam, following an arrest warrant issued by the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT).
He was taken into custody early Saturday from his residence in the capital’s Eskaton area, according to DB officials. The arrest was confirmed by Gazi MH Tamim, a prosecutor at the ICT.
A senior DB official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the arrest was carried out based on intelligence inputs after the tribunal issued a warrant against Nahidul Islam. He has since been handed over to investigators assigned to the case.
According to sources familiar with the investigation, former DIG Nahidul Islam is the prime accused in the murder of Jamaat-e-Islami leader Tarique Mohammad Saiful Islam, the eldest son of the late Shamir Uddin, former Ameer of the Jamaat’s Meherpur district unit.
A formal case is currently pending against Nahidul Islam at the International Crimes Tribunal.
