A Dhaka court on Sunday placed former Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI) official Manzil Haider Chowdhury on a fresh four-day remand in connection with the killing of a garment worker during the July uprising in the capital’s Adabor area.
Metropolitan Magistrate Hasib Ullah Pias issued the order following a remand hearing, after another court earlier approved his arrest in the same case.
According to the prosecution, Manzil Haider was arrested on 9 April from the DOHS area in Mohakhali. He has since been taken on multiple remands in different cases. In a case filed with New Market Police Station over the killing of businessman Abdul Wadud, he was remanded for a total of 12 days in three phases.
He was also remanded in a case under the Anti-Terrorism Act filed with Ramna Model Police Station-five days on 22 April, four days on 26 April, and three days on 30 April.
After completion of earlier remand periods, investigating officer Inspector Amjad Hossain Talukdar of the Ramna zonal team produced him before the court, seeking his detention in jail.
Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam subsequently ordered that he be sent to jail.
Later, Detective Branch (DB) Inspector Mohammad Tipu Sultan of Tejgaon Division sought to show him arrested in the Rubel murder case and applied for a seven-day remand.
Metropolitan Magistrate Jamsed Alam granted the application to show him arrested, paving the way for a separate hearing on remand.
During the remand hearing, defense counsel Kamal Hossain moved a bail petition and sought cancellation of the remand, while the prosecution opposed the plea. After hearing both sides, the court granted a four-day remand.
According to the case details, on 5 August, 2024-the final day of the July uprising-Rubel joined a procession of several hundred protesters in Ring Road area of Adabor around 11am.
During the march, gunfire allegedly erupted involving law enforcement personnel and activists affiliated with the Awami League and its associate organisations.
Rubel sustained bullet injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
His father Rafiqul Islam filed the murder case with Adabor Police Station on 22 August last year.
