A Dhaka court on Thursday granted a fresh three-day remand for former DGFI officer retired major Manzil Haider Chowdhury in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
Metropolitan Magistrate Jamsed Alam passed the order after Sub-Inspector Amzad Hossain Talukder of the Detective Branch’s Dhanmondi Zone produced the accused before the court and sought a fresh seven-day remand, stating that further interrogation was necessary.
The accused was produced before the court upon completion of a four-day remand.
State prosecutor Shamsuddoha Sumon supported the remand petition, while defence lawyer Kamal Hossain opposed it and sought cancellation.
After hearing arguments from both sides, the court granted an additional three days remand.
According to the case statement, members of the banned organisation Chhatra League and the political party Awami League, whose political activities are banned, brought out a procession on 12 September last year in front of Rupayan Tower under Ramna Police Station, chanting anti-government slogans and allegedly attempting to create unrest and destabilise the situation.
Police said some participants attempted to flee after sensing their presence, and several individuals were detained from the spot.
A case under the Anti-Terrorism Act was subsequently filed with Ramna Model Police Station.
Manzil Haider was arrested on 9 April from the DOHS area in Mohakhali.
He was earlier shown arrested in a separate case filed with New Market Police Station and placed on multiple remand orders in different cases.
