A Dhaka court on Monday placed fired Lt Col Md Afzal Naser, a former director of Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI), on a fresh two-day remand in connection with the murder of Mahmudul Hasan.
Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Zakir Hossain passed the order after the investigating officer, Sub-inspector Mohammad Ashraful Alam of Uttara East Police Station, produced the accused in court following the completion of a previous four-day remand granted on 23 April.
Although the investigating officer sought a further seven-day remand for interrogation, the court granted two days. The matter was confirmed by prosecution lawyer Shamsuddoha Suman.
The remand petition alleged that extensive terrorist activities were carried out under Naser’s instructions and funding during July Uprising. Investigators argued that further questioning was essential to uncover the underlying motives and ensure a proper investigation.
According to the proceedings, Mahmudul Hasan participated in a procession during July Uprising. On 5 August, 2024 around 4pm, as the protesters reached the Azampur footover bridge on the east side of Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway, the accused and several unidentified individuals, armed with weapons, allegedly opened fire on the crowd.
Mahmudul was shot and collapsed on the road. His family subsequently filed a murder case at Uttara East Police Station.
Naser was apprehended by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DB) in the early hours of 30 March from Mirpur DOHS. Since his arrest, he has been remanded multiple times in connection with separate murder cases at Mirpur Model and Paltan police stations.
To date, the former military officer has spent a total of 28 days on remand across various cases.
