A Dhaka court on Sunday placed former Dhaka South City Corporation Ward-40 councillor Abul Kalam Azad Mintu on a two-day remand in a case filed over an attack on the motorcade of former prime minister Khaleda Zia.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Jewel Rana passed the order after the accused was produced before the court from jail.
The investigation officer of the case, Shahbagh Police Station Sub-Inspector Md Hasanuzzaman, sought a seven-day remand for interrogation.
Defence counsel submitted a petition seeking bail and cancellation of the remand prayer.
After hearing both sides, the court rejected the bail plea and granted police a two-day remand to question the former councillor.
According to the case statement, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia left her Gulshan residence on 22 April 2015 with a motorcade to campaign for BNP-backed Dhaka North City Corporation mayoral candidate Tabith Awal.
When the convoy reached the Banglamotor intersection around 5:30pm, it allegedly came under a pre-planned attack.
Several vehicles were vandalised and a number of people were beaten and injured in the assault.
