Dismissed army officer Major (retd) Md Sadiqul Haque Sadiq was awaiting release after a Dhaka court rejected a police plea to show him as arrested in a case filed at Vatara Police Station under the Anti‑Terrorism Act.
But before his release, he was shown arrested in another case filed under the same law at Khilkhet Police Station, keeping him in jail despite the Vatara order.
On Tuesday, Metropolitan Magistrate Arifur Rahman ordered Sadiq’s arrest in the Khilkhet case following a petition by the investigation officer. SI Tarekur Rahman of the prosecution confirmed the development.
Sadiq had earlier been sentenced to three months in prison by a military court on 29 October 2024 and sent to jail. He was later shown as arrested in the Vatara Police Station case and secured bail from the High Court on 29 June.
Meanwhile, on 7 August, Vatara police sought to show him as arrested in a case over the burning of a private car in the area. The petition alleged the incident took place on 11 November 2025 as part of a “complete shutdown” programme aimed at destabilising the country and claimed Sadiq’s involvement.
Defence lawyer HM Al‑Amin argued in court that Sadiq was in jail at the time of the incident and questioned how he could be linked. The court sought explanations from the Vatara officer in charge and the investigation officer, who later submitted a written statement.
After reviewing it, Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Ehsanul Islam rejected the petition to show Sadiq as arrested in the car‑burning case.
Following that order, his lawyer said there was no bar to his release as no other arrest order was pending.
However, SI Md Shahjalal of Khilkhet Police Station then filed another petition to show him arrested in another Anti‑Terrorism Act case.
When Sadiq was produced on Tuesday, the court heard both sides and sent him back in jail after showing him arrested in the case.
According to case details, on 17 May last year around 2pm, police detained several dismissed army personnel in Khilkhet Bazar while they were allegedly engaged in subversive activities.
The case accused them of damaging the army’s image and threatening Dhaka Cantonment’s security by using a social media platform to spread provocative statements targeting the army.
Azizul Islam of the Logistics Area Headquarters at Dhaka Cantonment filed the case the next day at Khilkhet Police Station.
