Sumaiya Jafrin, the wife of army officer Major Sadique, has been shown arrested in a new case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act with the Gulshan Police Station.
Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Awlad Hossain Muhammad Jonaid issued the arrest order on Wednesday, following a petition by the investigation officer.
Deputy Superintendent of Prosecution Moktar Hossain confirmed the development. Government lawyer Mohammad Shamsuddoha Sumon argued in favor of her arrest during the hearing.
Sumaiya Jafrin was previously detained in connection with a case filed over her alleged involvement in guerrilla training of Awami League activists in Dhaka’s Bashundhara residential area.
Her husband, Major Sadiqul Haque, remains in army custody as part of the ongoing investigation into the same incident.
She was initially arrested on 6 August by Bhatara Police in a similar case. On 7 August, she was placed in a five-day remand, and after completing the remand, she gave a confessional statement in court on 12 August regarding secret meetings of Awami League leaders and activists, whose political activities were banned by the interim government. She was subsequently sent to jail.
The new petition, filed by DB Police Inspector Mozammel Haque Mamun, alleges that Sumaiya, as an active member of a banned organisation, provided funding, guidance, and instructions to disrupt national security and public order.
Investigators claim she maintained regular contact with influential members of the banned group and coordinated activities against the government in Dhaka and across the country.
According to the case statement, on 22 April, around 30 to 35 members of the banned group held a protest rally near Jabbar Tower in Gulshan-1 under the banners of the banned student group Chhatra League and Awami League, chanting anti-state slogans and creating disorder.
Police arrested several participants on the spot, while others fled. A case was subsequently filed with the Gulshan Police Station.
