The European Union (EU) is set to conclude negotiations on a Comprehensive Partnership Agreement (PCA) with Bangladesh, acting managing director for Asia-Pacific at the European External Action Service (EEAS) Paola Pampaloni has.
In a courtesy meeting with Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus at the State Guest House Jamuna, Pampaloni discussed key aspects of Bangladesh–EU relations, including the ongoing the Framework Agreement on Comprehensive Partnership and Cooperation (PCA) negotiations.
Paola also held talks on the upcoming general elections and referendum, efforts to combat illegal migration, and opportunities to expand trade and investment.
The negotiations on PCA, which began in November 2024, mark a significant milestone after two decades of a general partnership agreement between the EU and Bangladesh.
Pampaloni expressed her appreciation for the leadership of Professor Yunus, highlighting the “incredible and massive” reforms he has initiated since taking office in August 2025. She noted that the EU, as Bangladesh’s largest commercial and political partner, values these reforms highly, especially at this critical juncture for the country.
“The progress made on the PCA is remarkable and appreciated by the European Union,” Pampaloni said, adding that the agreement would open up new opportunities for both trade and investment, thereby strengthening the relationship between the two partners.
In response, Yunus thanked the EU for its consistent support to the Interim Government over the past 17 months, describing the PCA as a vital agreement that would “solidify” the already strong Bangladesh–EU relations.
Pampaloni also confirmed that the EU considers its relationship with Bangladesh a top priority, evident from its decision to deploy a high-level election observation mission for the general elections scheduled for 12 February.
She noted that the head of the EU Election Observation Mission would arrive in Bangladesh soon and engage with political leaders and authorities in preparation for the elections.
Professor Yunus stressed the importance of both the general elections and the referendum for Bangladesh’s democratic transition.
He expressed confidence that political parties would support the “yes” vote in the referendum and reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring free, fair, and peaceful elections.
“This time, people will vote in a festive manner,” he added, highlighting the significance of a peaceful electoral process after years of autocratic rule.
Pampaloni reiterated the EU’s support for a peaceful election process, noting that a successful democratic transition could elevate Bangladesh–EU relations to new heights, creating a new chapter of engagement with the world’s largest economic bloc.
Also present at the meeting were Lutfey Siddiqi, special envoy of the chief adviser; Lamiya Morshed, SDG Coordinator and Senior Secretary; and Michael Miller, the European Union Ambassador to Bangladesh.
