At least 28 people have been killed and many others injured after a bus plunged into a ravine in northern Ethiopia on Monday, local authorities said.
Officials said the bus was travelling from Dessie city in the Amhara region to the capital Addis Ababa when it went off the road and fell into a ravine about 100 metres (330 feet) deep. The authorities shared the information on Facebook.
They said 28 people died in the crash, while many others suffered minor and severe injuries. However, exact figures of the injured were not provided.
The survivors were taken to nearby medical facilities for treatment. An investigation has been launched into the incident.
The total number of passengers on board has not been disclosed.
Images shared on the regional official Facebook page showed the bus lying on a hillside, heavily damaged and almost completely destroyed.
Road accidents are common in Ethiopia, Africa’s second most populous country, where road conditions are often poor.
In December 2024, more than 70 people were killed when a vehicle carrying a wedding party fell into a river in southern Ethiopia. It was the deadliest road accident in the country in 25 years.
In September of the same year, a bus crashed into a river in the southern Wolaita area, killing at least 28 people and injuring 19 others seriously.
