Chelsea will be without Estevao for the rest of the season after the young forward suffered a hamstring injury.

The 19-year-old picked up the injury in the first half of last week’s match against Manchester United. The setback has now put his place at the World Cup in serious doubt.

Interim coach Calum McFarlane said there is no clear timeline for the player’s recovery.

“Estevao unfortunately won’t play for us this season because he is going to be out for some time. That’s really unfortunate, especially for someone so young and so talented,” McFarlane said.

“I am sure he is hopeful of making the World Cup, but I don’t know about that.”

Estevao was taken off after just 16 minutes in the 1-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge. He also missed the 3-0 loss to Brighton & Hove Albion.

The Brazil forward joined Chelsea from Palmeiras last year and has scored eight goals this season.

He was expected to be part of Carlo Ancelotti’s squad for the World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico. He had been in good form for Brazil, scoring five goals in his last six matches.
